Live Performance: “Beauty Behind Walls of Horror: The Role of Music During the Holocaust”

August 29, 2024 | 6:30pm CDT

9603 Woods Drive, Skokie, IL 60077

Internationally renowned flutist Dr. Christine Erlander Beard presents a powerful recital of music performed in the concentration camps and ghettos of German-occupied Europe during the Holocaust, accompanied by a discussion.

Dr. Beard will delve into the Nazi’s cultural “purification” objectives concerning music, the affected musicians and composers across occupied Europe, the music of the era, and the role that music played during the Holocaust. The performance will feature works composed by victims of the Holocaust, including “Aubade” by Marius Fothuis, “Five Pastorales” by Reine Colaço Osorio-Swabb, and an excerpt from the hauntingly beautiful “Flute Sonata,” the final composition by Leo Smit.

Reservations required. Free to the public.
