On-site: Civics in the Early Grades
For Educators in Grades 3-6
Civics, the lifelong process that makes people “active, responsible, and knowledgeable members of their communities,” provides a framework for students of any age to consider issues of individual and collective responsibility, prejudice, and justice. Civics can also frame an entry point for age-appropriate discussions of human and civil rights, history, and current events. But what does—and can—civics look like in the early and middle grades? In this session, explore strategies and resources ranging from literature to hands-on experiences to engage 3rd to 6th grade students in skill-building to become engaged citizens in their classrooms and beyond.
