Transforming the Future through Inclusion

Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center is committed to fostering and maintaining an environment of equity and inclusion for all – visitors, learners, community members, partners, and key stakeholders. Our staff, board members, and volunteers are part of this shared commitment and embrace creating an institution where everyone is welcomed, respected, and valued.

We recognize that this is an ongoing journey. As an institution of both memory and action we are committed to taking steps to move forward, advancing our institutional mission dedicated to our founding principle – Remember the Past, Transform the Future. The history of the Holocaust teaches what happens when hatred, bigotry, and antisemitism are left unchallenged, laying a foundation for persecution, exclusion, and inequity. That is why the Museum believes embracing an inclusive and accessible environment enriches our understanding of the past and empowers us to create a more equitable and just future.

We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, sex, marital status, order of protection status, ability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or gender identity feel valued, respected, and empowered.

Through our exhibitions, collections, and educational programs, we are committed to transforming the future by:

  • Honoring the memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.
  • Hosting and facilitating exhibitions, training, and programming that teach the universal lessons that combat hatred, prejudice, and indifference – inspiring and enabling individuals to take meaningful action to build a more just and peaceful world.
  • Addressing disparities and barriers that prevent communities from accessing our exhibitions, resources, and educational opportunities.
  • Using best practices to actively build a culture of inclusion in every aspect of the Museum life, including staff, volunteers, community partners, and lay leadership.
